AFL Asia hosted the Shanghai Cup yesterday, Saturday May 13, at Wellington College International in Shanghai.


A tournament for Opens, Masters and Juniors was held in conjunction with AustCham Shanghai Summer BBQ.

Across the three divisions, teams came from Beijing, Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Japan, Lao, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam and Bangkok joining teams from Shanghai.


The curtain closer to the Round 8 Toyota AFL Premiership season match at Jiangwan Stadium will see Team China play the AFL Asia Lions in four 12 minute quarters. Team China is an all-Chinese team featuring players predominantly from the Port Adelaide support Guangzhou Scorpions program and will be led by Port Adelaide recruit Chen Shaoliang.


The team is coached by three time China International Cup representative Zhang Hao. Playing against team China will be the AFL Asia Lions, a team of representatives from the Japan Samurais and Indonesia Garudas AFL International Cup squads. the AFL Asia Lions will be co-coached by Barry Anderson (Garudas coach) and Brett Qualtrough (Samurais coach).
