AFL Diversity Umpires Launch

Tuesday, April 05, 2016

The AFL Diversity Umpire Academy Launch was an event that aimed to promote the Umpires Academy that was held at the Australian International Academy

The generous support of the Scanlon Foundation will see 10 diversity academies nationally for umpires run through the 2016 year, designed to engage people from indigenous and multicultural backgrounds.

The idea of these academies is to introduce people from Multi Cultural Backgrounds into umpiring giving them a 10-week course in umpiring basics and then linking them with a local umpiring group. For example at Australian International Academy with the support of Adam Nahal (AFL School Ambassador) was linked with Essendon District Football League after they went through the course, five of the participants ended up umpiring on the weekends.

Four academies will run in Victoria with a further one apiece in New South Wales, the Northern Territory, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania and Western Australia.

Last year, two Academies ran in Victoria with one each in the other six states, leading to an increase in umpiring ranks at community level from people from indigenous and multicultural backgrounds.
